Understanding the Claude 5-hour window

The 5-hour window is the limit most people hit first. Here is exactly how it works.

A rolling window

The 5-hour window opens on your first message and caps how much you can do in the next five hours. It resets five hours after it opened — not on a fixed clock — and runs independently of the separate weekly cap.

Reading it honestly

JP the Cat surfaces Codex's 5-hour used-percent automatically and Claude's via the opt-in statusline capture, both tagged `official` and never presented once the reset time has passed.

Common questions

When does the 5-hour window reset?
Five hours after it opened (your first message of the window), independent of the weekly cap.
